The Plymouth Playhouse originally opened as the Radisson Playhouse, a part of the new Radisson Plymouth Hotel/Corporate Conference Center, a primary corporate enterprise of Curtis Carlson, Chairman of the Board of Carlson Companies and Radisson Hotel Corporation. It was his vision to develop a strong American -Japanese corporate partnership that embraced a strong marketing relationship with the Twin Cities. Don Stolz, founder/producer/director of the well-known Old Log Theatre and close friend of Carlson was ask to be the Theater's Artistic Director. The Theater, then known as the Radisson Playhouse, opened in typical Minnesotan style --in the middle of a blizzard, January 20, 1974 with Woody Allen's Play It Again Sam. Over the years the playhouse was operated by Curt Carlson - Radisson Corp., U.S. Communications, Minnesota Music Theatre, Bill Fegan Attractions, Playcrafters, Stage Two and Troupe America, Inc.

For the last 16 years, Troupe America has operated the Plymouth Playhouse. The Playhouse, now in its 33rd year, has been the home of many long-running, award-winning productions including a one-year run of the Twin Cities Drama Critics Circle award winner - Diamond Studs. The Plymouth Playhouse was chosen to be the first venue to produce the popular Broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes by the New York producers. It went on to garner top reviews and awards in its five year run. The popular musical Nunsense also enjoyed a five-year run and became the second longest running musical in Twin Cities theatrical history. The Plymouth Playhouse has also been the home of popular off-Broadway musicals, The Taffetas, Oil City Symphony, A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline and Troupe America's own The Lovely Liebowitz Sisters, a production that has since had long runs across the country in such cities as Des Moines, St. Louis, Kansas City, Detroit, Columbus and Atlantic City. From 1997 to January 2002 the Playhouse was home to Minnesota's longest running homegrown musical How to Talk Minnesotan The Musical based on Howard Mohr’s bestselling book and just completed 63 week run of I Love You, Your Perfect, Now Change, off broadway's longest running hit musical review!
